Meet the current team.

  • Dipanjan has recently graduated with a PhD in the area of nanophotonics for biosensing applications. He is currently a postdoctoral fellow for the group. Dipanjan had joined the group in January 2017 and his project goal was to develop leaky nanoresonator device platforms for biosensing applications for biomarkers such as, viruses, bacteria and proteins. He has demonstrated SARS-CoV-2 detection using a plasmonic gold nanoresonator array based device. He also has worked on developing leaky nanoresonators using MoS2 for biosensing applications. Before joining the group Dipanjan has completed his MS from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and has worked at the Bose Institute in Kolkata, India.

    Advanced Materials and Devices

  • Andres received his undergraduate degree in Engineering Physics from Universidad Nacional de Colombia Manizales Campus in Manizales, Colombia, in 2018. During his undergraduate program, he carried out research in CIS thin-films and III-V:Mn semiconductor thin-films for solar cells and magnetic sensor applications, respectively. He joined the group in Fall 2019 as a MSc student and is currently pursuing a PhD. Working on 2D materials, his current research focuses on deposition and material characterization of MoS2 and BN ultra-thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD), as well as the fabrication and characterization of MoS2 and BN based electronic devices such as field effect transistors (FETs)

  • Jyoti Yadav completed her B.Tech in Electronics and Communication from Maharishi Dayanand University in Haryana, India . She has also completed M.Tech in Nanoscience and Technology from Kurukshetra University in Haryana, India. After M.Tech, she worked on MEMS based sensor at CSIR-CEERI, India as Senior Project Fellow. In 2019, she joined the Centre for Nano Science and Engineering (CeNSE) at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, India as a Project Assistant and worked on 2D material based NEMS devices till 2021. Currently, she is pursuing her PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering department from the University of Alberta

  • Yuchen Shao graduated with a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering from the China University of Mining and Technology in 2017 and earned a master’s degree in materials science and engineering from Clemson University. He joined Dr. Manisha Gupta’s group in 2021 to pursue a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering. He is now aiming to fabricate and characterize OECT (organic electrochemical transistor) lactate sensors. Also, he is aiming to find potential biocompatible substrates which will be used for holding 3D printed electrodes as another project he is working on right now.

  • Michelle graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with distinction in 2021. As an undergraduate co-op student in 2019, she supported research at the Modular Construction Research Group. After graduating, she joined the research group in July 2021 pursuing a master of science in electrical and computer engineering with a specialization in microsystems and nanodevices and is currently working on two flexible biosensors utilizing 3D printing, microfabrication and organic semiconductors. Her first project is a pressure sensor utilizing an organic thin film transistor and pressure sensitive PDMS microstructures. The other project is a pH sensor for monitoring pH in wounds.

    Biosensing

  • Anoushka has graduated with a BSc in Nano-Electrical Engineering at the University of Alberta and is pursuing an MSc in Biomedical Engineering. She has been working with the group since May 2022 as a research assistant over the summer and then as a Dean’s Research Award student during the 2022-2023 academic year. During her time so far, she has worked on developing flexible biosensors and a read-out circuit for a diabetic wound sensor system as well as designed and simulated electroosmotic flow pumps for the purposes of sweat transport. Her current work is part of the AICE project for detecting and preventing diabetic neuropathy where she is working on an ion-selective biosensor and machine learning for predictive analysis.

  • Wael graduated with a BSc in Electrical-Nano Engineering in 2023 from the University of Alberta and has joined as a MSc student in Fall 2023 specializing in Microsystems and Nanodevices. He worked with the group since September 2022 as a Dean’s Research Award Recipient focusing on microfluidics and won the ECE Department Award through his work. He is currently developing sweat stimulation schematics for the detection of diabetic neuropathy, along with an organic electrochemical multiplexer and processing circuitry for integration to sensor electronics.

  • Muhammad Shahriyar Islam is pursuing his Master's degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Alberta since September 2023. He completed his degree in B.Eng. (Honours) Electronics majoring in Nanotechnology from Multimedia University, Malaysia in 2022. His current research focuses on quantum sensing using 2-dimensional (2D) materials.

  • Abdul Hadi graduated with a BSc in Engineering Physics with a specialization in Nanoengineering in 2023 from the University of Alberta. He joined Dr. Manisha's group fall of 2023 and is pursuing a MSc in Electrical engineering with a specialization in solid state devices. His current research is on photonic devices, with a focus on biosensing using 2D materials as well as research into reversible photonic integrated circuits using advanced materials.

  • Seema is pursuing her Master's degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Alberta since September 2022. She graduated with Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from the Royal University of Bhutan. Since 2019, she has been working as Assistant Lecturer in the Instrumentation and Control Engineering department at the College of Science and Technology in Bhutan. Seema is currently working on the design and fabrication of energy harvesters for biosensing wearable devices as her MSc research project.

  • Catlin completed his undergraduate in Engineering Physics at the University of Alberta in 2023 with a specialization in nanoengineering. He then joined the group under Dr. Manisha to study the fabrication of thin film and nano devices in pursuit of a master’s degree. His specific interests lie in fabrication methods and techniques to produce novel integrated devices. Catlin's current research focuses on methods to fabricate thin-film semiconductor devices with sufficient quality and yield to transition from standalone objects of study to integrated functional systems.

  • Haotian is currently a BSc student in the Electrical Engineering Nano Option Co-op program at the University of Alberta. He joined Dr. Manisha's group as a summer research assistant during his co-op work term in 2023, and he will become a graduate student under Dr. Gupta's supervision in May 2024. He carried out research on atomic-level simulation, pulsed laser deposition, and characterization of 2D material/structures in Dr. Gupta’s group during his undergraduate program.

  • Lixin is currently pursuing a BSc degree in electrical engineering with a nano option at the University of Alberta. During the summer of 2023, she joined Dr. Manisha's research group as a summer student and became a member of the biosensing team. Her current research focus is on exploring the properties of PEDOT:PSS hydrogel and its potential applications in the field of biology or other related disciplines.
